Today I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Moveable Feast at Cheney Stadium.
The gathering of over 30 food trucks in Tacoma was organized by the incredible Alyson Jones of the Tacoma Rainiers. Thank you, Alyson and the Rainiers for bringing such a great event to Tacoma! The best part? A portion of the proceeds benefit Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.
Tacoma doesn’t exactly have a huge food truck culture…yet. Back in 2010, I wrote about some changes that were being made to our local attitude and regulations, as well as the general lack of support and encouragement regarding creating a food truck/cart culture around here. I’m hoping that is something that will change, especially from the throngs of thousands of folks who flocked to today’s event.
The early entrance VIP time at 11 a.m. was slow starting, with little to no lines and plenty of room at the tables.
It really started to pick up as soon as the free general admission opened up at noon. I hear it’s currently a bit of a zoo.
But don’t let that stop you from coming down. The lines move fast, and there’s still lots of grub to be had.
I have been looking forward to this for weeks now, plotting out in my head my plan of attack.
After much debate, here’s what my husband and I ate:
Poutine from Skillet Street Food
I’m an admittedly obsessed with poutine. This gluttonous Canadian import, a mountain of hand-cut French fries smothered with luscious gravy and cheese is, well…awesome. Skillet’s version delivers everything wonderful about poutine, with a flavorful gravy and stretchy melted cheddar.
Chicken Indian Fry Bread Taco from Off the Rez
Indian fry bread what?! No, your eyes are not deceiving you. I had to try Off the Rez’s version of fry bread. Light, fluffy and topped with your choice of sweet or savory toppings, this is fusion at its best. Easily the most flavor-packed thing I ate all day, this Indian taco was something special. Though, it was kind of hard to eat.
Shrimp Po’ Boy and Beignets from Where Ya At Matt
Where Ya at Matt’s truck was a must try for me. Every time I see them featured on TV, I think, I need to try one of those po’ boys! The shrimp was crunchy, yet tender. It was the perfect sandwich. And then there were the beignets. Oh, the beignets. Hot out of the fryer, with a crunchy exterior and pillowy center, these New Orleans treats were mindblowingly good.
Short Rib Bahn Mi from Fusion on the Run
With a crunchy bun, pickled vegetables and a good amount of cilantro, this fusion version of a bahn mi was a delight. While the short ribs were more steaky than normally slow-cooked short ribs, it still hit the spot.
Salted Caramel Ice Cream from Ice Cream Social
Ice Cream Social, a Tacoma business just started in May, serves up truly amazing ice cream made from local ingredients. This is the best ice cream I’ve ever had. Really. And it’s made in Tacoma. So proud. As you can tell, my husband didn’t like it at all. Just kidding!

With fun activities for kids and adults such as decorating cupcakes with Celebrity Cake Studio and a beer garden, the day was filled with a great sense of community, the inaugural Moveable Feast was an event that Tacomans really got behind and supported, with good reason. I look forward to next year’s event.
